Vivian Bruchez, Boris Langenstein and Valaisan Gilles Sierro skied on the first of November, and not just any line. Nothing less than two openings on two \u20184000s\u2019 in the Mont Blanc massif: pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne and pointe Croz, in the Grandes Jorasses. Two of the 82 4000 ski summits that Vivian Bruchez has collected. This major double was achieved in one go from the valley. I<\/span>t’s an unusual first day of November. Skiing two \u20184000\u2019 on this date? And why not? In November 2012, Vivian Bruchez skied the Migot spur at Le Chardonnet with a certain Kilian Jornet. Nevertheless. At that time of year, given the almost spring-like conditions on the south face, the idea wasn’t so far-fetched. Except that carving your first turns of the season at the summit of Pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne, at over 4000 metres, with a 50\u00b0 gradient, is something special, even if the three skiers had done a few turns a day or two before.<\/p>\n

It’s a story of friends, of rope-party spirit, gathered around Vivian Bruchez’s project to ski the 82 4000m peaks in the Alps. Of course, some summits are not skiable – the Aiguilles du Diable, for example – but in this case, Vivian aims to ski \u2018as close as possible\u2019 to the summit, for example in the previous case the couloirs leading to the base of the Aiguilles. For Vivian, it’s all about taking a fresh look at the summits. It’s his way of exploring the 82 4000m summits, a quest she began twenty years ago, when she skied down the classic Mont Blanc.<\/p>\n

Since then, Vivian Bruchez has clocked up around 100 descents on the … 79 or 80 summits he has already covered, and around twenty first descents on skis! How did you come up with the idea of returning to ski in the Grandes Jo?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

Vivian Bruchez<\/strong> : Two days earlier we went skiing on the Tour Ronde with Boris Langenstein. I wanted to see the snow conditions at altitude, and also check on my ankle, which has been giving me trouble this year. In fact, last Tuesday we skied the normal route of the Tour Ronde, we put our boots on next to the Madonna, at the summit! Boris and I had never skied the normal route before, so we were very happy. And I was even happier to see that my ankle was holding up. As the Mont Blanc tunnel was closed, I came via the Grand St-Bernard, while Boris, based at La Rosi\u00e8re, came via the Petit St-Bernard. I stayed in Courmayeur to watch the snow conditions. The next day, I took a big electric mountain bike ride above Courmayeur to do some scouting.<\/p>\n

Did you have any other information?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I’d actually been thinking about these two routes for a while, at Pointe Croz and on the side of Pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne. I knew that the Italian Denis Trento had done this beautiful descent from Pointe Whymper in March 2017. As for me, I had skied the classic mountaineering descent route from pointe Whymper. At the time, in 2022, we also skied Pointe Walker with Tom Lafaille. Anyway, this week I saw that conditions were good, and I sent photos to Gilles Sierro, who was in Switzerland, and to Boris. With suggestions for lines! How did the double ascent andtwo descents go?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

Vivian Bruchez<\/strong> : I tried it and failed there last June because the isotherm was too high. And it’s still a hell of a mission. With almost three thousand metres of ascent. This time, the three of us strategically wanted to sleep at the Boccalate hut to save two and a half hours’ walking. Then Gilles told us that he had to do something and that we wouldn’t be leaving until late afternoon. But we didn’t stick to this initial strategy. In fact, on Thursday evening, we packed our bags and were ready to leave around 6pm. Frankly, we thought, why go up there to rest for two hours? We might as well go to a restaurant in Courmayeur. Which we did! After a bit of a rest, we set the alarm for midnight and set off at one o’clock. Which summit first?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Vivian Bruchez<\/strong> : We took our time, taking two and a half hours to get to Boccalate. Then we climbed up the rocks at Le Reposoir. Then we climbed the south-east flank of Pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne to reach the summit ridge of the Jorasses. From there, we went to the real summit of Pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne with Boris, wearing crampons. It’s quite a climb! It took us two hours round trip. Well, we could have gone to Pointe Marguerite, which is one of the last 4000 that I miss, but that would have taken two more hours and compromised our chances of skiing. There were snowfalls on the ridge! If we wanted to be able to ski, we had to stop there. We then joined Gilles, who was waiting for us, to ski this slope to the east of Pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne, as far as the rimaye. We put our crampons back on to climb Pointe Croz, 4110 metres, doing a loop to the right. Then we put our boots back on and skied down.<\/p>\n

For the rest, the line is logical, with a passage to the left of the serac (looking from the front) made possible by the glacial retreat. Only one thirty-metre abseil was needed. This creates a large snow circus on the right bank of the Rochers du Reposoir. It’s really classy because it adds something to the line. And above all, the line is super high in the end, which makes for a longer, fuller line that’s really interesting from a skiing point of view. It was a nice surprise rather than just “topping the high points of the peaks” to say we’d done them. How do you still find the means (and motivation) to draw new lines on peaks that are right in front of us, like in Rochefort?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

Yes, they’re right in front of us, we see them all the time, but in the end, even I… I’ve skied everywhere in the Mont-Blanc massif, in every direction, looking for slopes to ski. I wouldn’t have been so involved in the 4,000 project, I might not have been so interested in its summits.<\/p>\n

In fact, when I was scouting, I said, at the Jorasses, frankly, it’s going to be 200 metres, it’s going to be zigzags in the rocks. Honestly, I was a bit like that. And in fact, the closer we got to the routes, when we started climbing them, we said to ourselves, no, but in fact, it’s really classy. Pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne is very aerial. How many summits have you skied or approached on skis in your quest for the 82 x 4000?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

I try to climb the summits even if the last few metres or pitches are not skiable. On the other hand, on the Saas 4000, for example, many of the summits are normal mountaineering routes that are accessible on skis. Other summits are landmark openings: the \u2018X\u2019 on the T\u00e4schhorn with Paul Bonhomme, or this spring, after a rare descent of the Zinalrothorn, a first on the Schreckhorn with Aurel Lardy.<\/p>\n

At Jorasses, I still have Pointe Marguerite. We could have gone there, but that would have been too much, both in terms of timing and safety. It’s a long-term project, and I’m taking the time I need to do things properly. I’ve only got two summits left, maybe three, I’ll have to check. And these summits are all in the Mont Blanc massif: Pointe Marguerite in Jorasses, Mont Brouillard on the Italian side, and the Grand Pilier d’Angle, although I passed close by on my descent from Peuterey with Kilian Jornet. There are two points on the GPA and I’m going to check again. As for Mont Brouillard, I skied within a hundred metres of it on my descent of Pointe Louis Am\u00e9d\u00e9e with Guillaume Pierrel. But I’ll have to go back there to reach the highest point.<\/p>\n

For the Jorasses, I knew I needed Boris and I needed Gilles, I needed their expertise, their level to make it work. Sauf que tracer ses premiers virages de la saison au sommet de la pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne, \u00e0 plus de 4000 m\u00e8tres, avec 50\u00b0 de pente, est particulier, m\u00eame si les trois skieurs avaient fait quelques virages un ou deux jours avant.\n\nUn tour de force ? C'est d\u00e9j\u00e0 une histoire de copains, d'esprit de cord\u00e9e, rassembl\u00e9e autour du projet de Vivian Bruchez de skier les 82 4000 des Alpes. Je voulais voir les conditions de neige en altitude, et puis voir \u00e9galement comment allait ma cheville, qui m'a caus\u00e9 des soucis cette ann\u00e9e. En fait, mardi dernier, on skie la voie normale de la Tour Ronde, on a chauss\u00e9 \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la Madone, au sommet ! On n'avait jamais ski\u00e9 la voie normale ni Boris ni moi, donc nous \u00e9tions tr\u00e8s contents. Et moi d'autant plus de voir que ma cheville tenait le coup. Le tunnel du Mont Blanc \u00e9tant ferm\u00e9, je suis venu par le Grand St-Bernard, Boris, lui, bas\u00e9 \u00e0 la Rosi\u00e8re, est venu par le Petit St-Bernard. Je suis rest\u00e9 \u00e0 Courmayeur pour aller jumeler les conditions. Le lendemain, j'ai fait un grand tour \u00e0 VTTAE au-dessus de Courmayeur pour faire des rep\u00e9rages.\n

Tu avais d'autres infos ?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\nEn fait, cela faisait un moment que j'imaginais ces deux itin\u00e9raires, \u00e0 la pointe Croz et sur le flanc de la pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne aux Jorasses. Je savais que l'italien Denis Trento a fait cette belle descente depuis la pointe Whymper en mars 2017. Quant \u00e0 moi, j'avais ski\u00e9 l'itin\u00e9raire de descente classique d'alpinisme de la pointe Whymper. \u00c0 l'\u00e9poque, en 2022, on a aussi ski\u00e9 la pointe Walker avec Tom Lafaille. Bref, cette semaine je vois que les conditions sont bonnes, et j'envoie des photos \u00e0 Gilles Sierro, qui est en Suisse, et \u00e0 Boris. Et \u00e7a reste une sacr\u00e9e mission. Avec presque trois mille m\u00e8tres de d\u00e9nivel\u00e9. L\u00e0 cette fois, \u00e0 trois, on voulait strat\u00e9giquement dormir au refuge Boccalate pour gagner deux heures trente de marche. Puis Gilles nous dit qu'il a des imp\u00e9ratifs, qu'on partira seulement en fin d'apr\u00e8s-midi. Mais on n'a pas gard\u00e9 cette strat\u00e9gie initiale. En fait, jeudi soir, on pr\u00e9pare nos sacs et on est pr\u00eats \u00e0 partir vers 18h pass\u00e9s. On se dit, franchement, monter pour se reposer deux heures ? \u00a0Quel sommet en premier ?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\nVivian Bruchez<\/strong> : On a pris notre temps, en mettant deux heures trente pour aller \u00e0 Boccalate. Ensuite, on a remont\u00e9 les rochers du Reposoir. Puis on a gravi le flanc sud-est de la pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne pour d\u00e9boucher sur l'ar\u00eate sommitale des Jorasses. De l\u00e0, on est all\u00e9s au vrai sommet de la pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne avec Boris, en crampons. C'est un chantier ! On a mis deux heures aller-retour. Bon, on aurait pu aller \u00e0 la pointe Marguerite, qui est l'un des derniers 4000 qui me manque, mais \u00e7a allait prendre deux heures de plus et compromettre nos chances de skier. Il y avait des p\u00e9t\u00e9es de neige sur l'ar\u00eate ! Si on veut pouvoir skier, il fallait s'arr\u00eater l\u00e0. Ensuite on a rejoint Gilles qui nous attendait, pour skier cette pente \u00e0 l'est de la pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne, jusqu'\u00e0 la rimaye. On a remis les crampons pour gravir la pointe Croz, 4110 m\u00e8tres, en faisant une boucle par la droite. Puis nous avons rechauss\u00e9 et sommes descendus \u00e0 skis.\n\nPour la suite, la ligne est logique, avec un passage \u00e0 gauche du s\u00e9rac (en regardant de face) rendu possible par le retrait glaciaire. Un seul rappel de trente m\u00e8tres a \u00e9t\u00e9 n\u00e9cessaire. \u00c7a fait un grand cirque de neige en rive droite des Rochers du Reposoir. C'est m\u00e9ga classe parce que \u00e7a rajoute quelque chose \u00e0 la ligne. Et puis surtout, la ligne est super haute au final, \u00e7a fait une ligne plus longue, plus compl\u00e8te, qui a vraiment de l'int\u00e9r\u00eat au niveau ski. C'\u00e9tait une belle surprise plut\u00f4t que de juste, entre guillemets, toper les points culminants des pointes pour dire de les avoir fait. Comment trouves-tu encore le moyen de tracer des nouvelles lignes sur des sommets qu'on a sous le nez, comme \u00e0 Rochefort ?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

Oui, ils sont devant nous, on les voit tout le temps, mais finalement, m\u00eame moi... J'ai ski\u00e9 quand m\u00eame vraiment partout, le massif du Mont-Blanc, un peu dans tous les sens, \u00e0 chercher des pentes de neige \u00e0 skier. Je n'aurais pas \u00e9t\u00e9 autant investi dans ce projet des 4 000, je me serais peut-\u00eatre pas int\u00e9ress\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e0 ses sommets.<\/p>\n

En fait dans mes rep\u00e9rages, je disais, aux Jorasses, franchement, \u00e7a va faire 200 m\u00e8tres, \u00e7a va \u00eatre des zigzags dans les cailloux. Honn\u00eatement, j'\u00e9tais un peu comme \u00e7a. Et en fait, plus on s'est rapproch\u00e9 des itin\u00e9raires, quand on a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 grimper dedans, on s'est dit, non, mais en fait, c'est m\u00e9ga classe. La Pointe H\u00e9l\u00e8ne, c'est hyper a\u00e9rien. Combien de sommets as-tu ski\u00e9 ou approch\u00e9 \u00e0 skis dans ta qu\u00eate des 82 4000 ?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\nJe m'attache \u00e0 gravir les sommets m\u00eame si les derniers m\u00e8tres, ou derni\u00e8res longueurs, ne sont pas faisables \u00e0 skis. \u00c0 contrario, par exemple sur les 4000 de Saas plein de sommets sont des voies normales d'alpinisme accessibles \u00e0 skis. D'autres sommets sont par contre des ouvertures marquantes : le \u00abX\u00bb au T\u00e4schhorn<\/a> avec Paul Bonhomme, ou ce printemps apr\u00e8s une rare descente du Zinalrothorn une premi\u00e8re au Schreckhorn<\/a> avec Aurel Lardy.\n\nAux Jorasses, il me reste la pointe Marguerite. L\u00e0, on aurait pu y aller, mais \u00e7a aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 trop, que ce soit en timing ou niveau s\u00e9curit\u00e9. C'est un projet au long cours, et je prends le temps qu'il faut pour faire les choses comme il faut. Il ne me reste que deux sommets, peut-\u00eatre trois, je dois v\u00e9rifier. Et ces sommets sont tous dans le massif du Mont Blanc : la pointe Marguerite aux Jorasses, le mont Brouillard versant italien, et le Grand Pilier d'Angle, quoique je sois pass\u00e9 \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 lors de ma descente de Peuterey avec Kilian Jornet. Il y a deux pointements au GPA et je vais rev\u00e9rifier. Sinon, le mont Brouillard, j'ai ski\u00e9 \u00e0 cent m\u00e8tres \u00e0 peine lors de la descente de la pointe Louis Am\u00e9d\u00e9e<\/a> avec Guillaume Pierrel.
